Mrs. Elizabeth Elder,  A resident of Marked Tree since an early age,
she lived in New York City for many years and worked for Joyce & Co. Sportswear.
She returned to Marked Tree in 1946, and served on a number of public boards
and commissions.  In 1998, she was named one of President Bush's Thousand Points
of Light and was named a Community Hero by the Arkansas Times.   She was also
presented a special Commendation from Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater.
She was a graduate of the Delta Business School of Marked Tree and served on the planning board of the Poinsett County Housing Meals of Wheels program and the board of the Poinsett County Housing Authority. A member of the Marked Tree City Council from 1974 to 1998, she was the first African-American to serve on the council. She was a member and secretary of the First Baptist Missionary Baptist Church. She was also active in teaching the voter's rights program in the area and was the first director of the Carver Head Start Center.
She was honored with a key to the city by Marked Tree Mayor Lawrence Ashlock and a street was named in her honor in appreciation of all her community service work. -The Jonesboro Sun, Oct. 1, 1999
