Waldenburg Cemetery

Surveyed by Marjorie Day Huber, 1999-2001

The Waldenburgh Cemetery is located on South Arkansas Street, behind the Zion Lutheran Church. The property is part of the 15 acres that was donated by Christian and Bertha Goedeke on November 23, 1881, to be used for a German Church and other church purposes. It is used as a community cemetery. There are numerous unknown and unmarked graves. However, we have stones that date back to 1901 and 1902. There are several children's graves with about the same year, indicating that an epidemic occurred.
According to the family history book written by Martha Hosto, her grandfather, Mr. Fritz Koehn became the first caretaker of the cemetery. His spring-wagon was used as a hearse at all funerals. Since then some of the caretakers have been Fred Knapple, Hank Wright and the present caretaker is Paul Horst, with Franklin Horst, Sonny Wolf, Troy Greeno and Tony Ramsey as assistants. February 26, 1962, a new addition was expanded with Arthur Wolf, Franklin Horst, Calvin Hesse, Lester Ruegger serving on the Committee.
