CITY OF LEPANTO, AR: Lepanto is the only town in the U.S. that bears that name. The town was named by David S. Buck after Lepanto, Greece. Prior to 1900 it was a vast wilderness. In 1901 C.B. Greenwood gave the land where Lepanto was built. He also hired the surveyors and Henry Hall cut the cane. The town was not incorporated until 1909. By 1910 the town had 2 cotton gins, telephone service, a bank with $20,000 capitol and resources of $50,000, a stave mill, band mill, box factory, and canning factory. There were also 2 churches and a two story brick school building. Through the years Lepanto has continued to grow. The last census showed a population of over 2000. Cotton is still King, but rice and soy beans also stimulate the economy. We also have the Museum - Lepanto U.S.A. which has attracted vacationers, tourists, and former residents. Lepanto is a beautiful town with over 2000 beautiful people.
