Newsom Cemetery

-Submitted by Judy McGee

James William Newsom and his wife Nancy D. Newsom came to this community from Tennessee in 1835 and homesteaded 160 acres of land, two miles south of this city (Harrisburg), the present site of the Newsom Cemetery and old home place.
Many of the family graves were never marked and the metal cemetery plates from the funeral home are no longer legible.
The oldest marked grave is that of Mary Elizabeth McGee Newsom, wife of Asbury Smith Newsom, who died November 3, 1940.

DIRECTIONS. From Intersection of Highway 1 and 14 at stop sign, take Highway 1 south for 2.1 miles. Turn east at Bethel Church sign. Turn south on Old Military Lane and go over an old iron bridge. Go 100 yards and turn east on Vinson Road and continue for .9 mile to Possum Hollow Intersection. Turn right and go .1 mile to small dirt road to left. Cemetery is located on the southeast corner of small dirt road.
