Harris Cemetery

The very first Harris in the area now known as Harrisburg, Arkansas was William H. Harris. It was in his home that Poinsett County's first county court was held. The home was the 'temporary seat of justice' before the court house at Bolivar could be built.
William H. Harris served as Poinsett's first county judge from 1838-1840. His son, William Henry, served as county judge from 1846-1848, 1850-1854, and 1856-1863. William H. Harris's youngest son, Benjamin, was elected to the Arkansas Legislative in 1848 and served in both branches, as did his grandson, Benjamin Jr. Another grandson, Addison Harris served three terms as sheriff of Poinsett County. These and other members of this large family settled what can best be described as an area stretching from Bethel Community to Jackson Street.
Just recently a monument was erected at the burial site of William H. Harris and his wife Susanna Roberts Harris.

DIRECTIONS. The Harris Family Plot is located in what used to be the Harris Settlement, near the old home place, about one mile south of Harrisburg. From Highway 14 at Harrisburg, take Main Street south .8 mile to Old Militay Lane Road. Go .5 mile south on the gravel road. Cemetery is on the west side of the road and partially fenced in.
