Funeral Homes

Almost all of our ancestors have been recorded in one final business record: that of the local mortician. These records can be very complete and include information not found elsewhere. Morticians' records are rich in genealogical information and may serve to clarify discrepancies in family records.

Notwithstanding, family researchers may have problems with morticians' records. The information contained in the records is only as accurate as the informant's knowledge and memory of the deceased. Therefore, inaccuracies can be present if the informant was not closely related to the deceased or lacked detailed knowledge.

NOTE: Funeral Home records are not in the public domain; therefore, release of information is a matter of individual policy. These records are privately owned and maintained by the funeral home owner.

The following establishments are not staffed to do lengthy searches. Please give accurate or approximate dates with your inquiries.

THE AMERICAN BLUE BOOK OF FUNERAL DIRECTORS
Kates-Boylston Publications
1501 Broadway
New York, NY 10036-5503
(212) 398-9266
It was first published in 1932 and republished every two years and is relevant to earlier genealogical research.
Any professional directory will locate an ancestor in time and place, but the funeral director's blue book will let you trace a funeral home to the present day and, if it has gone out of business, perhaps determine the successor and thus where the records might be.
A funeral home in 1932 may have been in business for fifty years, but in a given community, its records could almost substitute for death certificates.
