This cemetery is more commonly known as the Old Harrisburg City Cemetery. This 13 acre cemetery is owned and maintained by the Harrisburg Methodist Church. On November 1, 1880 the original 10 acres of land was purchased for the consideration of $1.00 from M.L. Shelton and I.A. Brookfield of Cross County. Receiving the land on behalf of the church as trustees were Thomas Sparks, Wilfred G. Godbey and Thomas Steele. The land had been surveyed by the founder of the church, Rev. John M. Steele, an accomplished surveyor.
The size of the cemetery was expanded in 1972 when Mrs. Virginia Shepherd and her husband, the late Roger D. Shepherd deeded a tract of land to the cemetery.
Today the trustees of the cemetery are Clyde Ford, Steve Cooper and J.F. Winningham.
The earliest known marked grave is that of A.M. Minton who died in 1857.
