Just found your page on the Web. I am related to the Lamew family (originally Le Meiux) who I believe were among the first settlers of the county. Information is very scarce, and I wonder if any Lamews remain in the county and if any of them have attempted to trace the family back past 1870? I have my charts from that date onwards. Thanks for any help you can give, and if it is important to anyone, I have some great pictures that belonged to my GGrandmother Lamew.

To: I was wondering if you could give me any information on my paternal Great Grandfather, Henry F. Newberry. He is buried in the Lawrence Memorial Park Cemetery. On South Old Lane, Block 5-8; Lot 4/1 (As H.F. Newberry 1853-1923). He lived in Lawrence County in 1910. He is listed on the 1910 census enumerated with Ira S. Newberry (his son). I am particularly wondering if it is recorded anywhere of a marriage he had sometime after 1896, after his first wife died. Also any mention of the children he had with this woman. Also a record of their divorce, if they had one. I know they separated, but they may have not divorced. He never remarried after that, so it is possible they were not legally divorced. My Paternal Great Grandfather's complete name is Henry Ferdinand Newberry. He had 5 children with his 1st wife. (Do not know her name). 4 sons: Ira S. 1880-1918; Albert (?-?; died in teens or early twenties); Edward 1885-1931; William Lumas (1886-1971) And a daughter named Etta (we think) who died as a teen. Henry was a Baptist preacher who traveled to different churches as an Evangelist. He lived with Ira's family after Ira died from Influenza in 1918. Ira's widow (Annie "Lane" Newberry) remarried a man named Oliver P. Killion a short while after that, and I don't know where he lived from about 1920-1923, when he died. I would sincerely appreciate any information you find on Henry F. Newberry. Incidentally, if you find any information on Oliver P. Killion, in your search for Henry, please inform, Oliver later became my maternal grandfather. (After Oliver and Annie divorced, he married my maternal grandmother, Josephine Johnson).

Thank you willingness to help.
Sincerely,
Karen Newberry Campbell

I am searching for information on my ggg and gg grandfathers. William H. SMITH was in Lawrence County Arkansas in 1842 when he married Missouri DUKES. I have no date or place of death for William H., nor any record of divorce, but Missouri was remarried by 1846 to Adam CLEMMONS. Any information on a William H. SMITH of Lawrence County, Arkansas would be helpful!! William H. and Missouri had at least one son, John E. SMITH, born possibly in 1844. John E. married Sarah Ann SULLIVAN, and they are shown in the 1870 Census of Sharp County AR with two of their children. After this, the family disappears...according to family lore, they moved to Indian Territory, Oklahoma. I have as yet to find traces of them there, other than what the 1900 Sharp County AR Census says is the birthplace of more of their children. In the 1900 Census, Sarah Ann SMITH is shown to be back in Arkansas, with no husband, calling herself a widow, with three different children. Any information on the descendants of John E.SMITH and Sarah Ann SULLIVAN SMITH would be extremely helpful.

Joel Milner family lived in Lawrence and then Independence Counties in the mid-to-late 1860-70's. During this time, Joel Milner worked on a riverboat or steamboat on the White River. According to family story, Joel named his granddaughter (my mother--Vaudrel Elizabeth Tipton) after a friend -- Riverboat/Steamboat "Captain Vaudrel." I've been unable to locate any specific information about Captain Vaudrel. Can't locate in census, cemetary records or SS Death Index. Are there river/steam boat societies/clubs/organizations, etc. that might have historical records of "captains?"

In the early 1820's a Clarender (Clarendon) HOOPER left Wayne County, IL and came to Lawrence County, AR. He brought with him a Cynthia MERRITT, whom he possible married. According to Probate records he was appointed Administrator on 27 March 1830 for William CRAVENS' estate. He also was appointed as Adm'r de bonis non on 4 Apr 1831. This information comes from a book by Marion Craig, M.D., now deceased. His wife told me that she turned all his research over to the Arkansas Historical Society. Does anyone know where the original Probate papers of Lawrence County for 1815-1890 are kept and is it possible to get copies of any of these? I would like copies for specimen handwritings, if Clarendon signed the papers. Dr. Craig once told me that he had seen the HOOPER signature on some of the papers. The Cynthia MERRITT HOOPER married a David Dunn SLOCUMB in Lawrence County in 1833, indicating that maybe Clarendon was deceased. Would anyone have any information on this situation, especially if it is possible to get copies with signatures? I will share any information I have on the HOOPER line which came out of Union County, KY.
