     He worked briefly with the "Rome Courier" from 1861-2. He joined the
     Confederate Army at age 17 and served until the end of the war. In 1866, he
     joined the staff of the "Cherokee Advertiser" {In Cherokee Co., AL.} and
     married Mary J. Cothers of Centre. Meeks purchased the "Gadsden Times" in
     1871, and published it until his death on Nov. 6, 1906. The paper then fell
     into the hands of his sons, Charles and James. Who sold it to W.S. Mudd and
