Name: John McCoy Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Springfield, OR Time: 2000-03-02 03:48:05 Comments: Hi, I am researching OLDHAM, GATEWOOD, HARCOURT, MCCOWAN, and DODSON surnames from Craighead County. Elmer MCCOWAN worked for the railroad as a telegraph operator in Craighead and Poinsett Counties from about 1911 to about 1918. In that time, he married (1) Lucy HARCOURT in 1911, and (2) Frances Leila "Fannie" OLDHAM about 1916 - 1917. I do not know what happened to Lucy Harcourt. Elmer and Frances had a daughter, Helen, in Craighead County, then moved to Nebraska by late 1918. They apparently took a girl named Leona Dodson with them from Craighead County, as the 1920 Nebraska Census has a Dodson girl, age 12 living with them as a border. There was a Dodson family living very close to Frances OLDHAM's parents (Thomas Henry OLDHAM adn Minnie Lee GATEWOOD) in the 1920 Craighead County census. Thomas OLDHAM and Minnie Lee GATEWOOD (both born in KY, but moved to Arkansas about 1913) had teh following known children: Frances "Fannie" (mentioned above), b. about 1896, KY Edith, b. about 1898, KY Junius, a son, b. 1900, KY Caroline "Carrie", b. about 1906, KY Ruth A. OLDHAM, b. about 1913, Craighead County, AR I know that Junius moved to California in the 1940's and died there in 1968. Frances died in Nebraska about 1972. What happened to the others? One of the girls was supposed to have married and lived near Weiner, AR all of her life. Which one was she? What happened to Lucy HARCOURT and who were her people? And who was Leona DODSON and why was she living as a border at age 12 with Elmer and Frances? Thanks, John |

My info is limited but here's what I have: Joseph Brewster Lashlee (known as J.B.) b. 2-26-1851; d. 11-19-1917 well known church of Christ preacher who helped establish a church in Cash, AR in 1879. His son: Jesse T. Lashlee b. 8-15-1889; d. 8-1962; m. Edna Virginia Tidmore b. 2-11-1892; d. 12-1970. Edna was raised by her grandparents McDaniels in and around Jonesboro. Her mother died in childbirth, father encouraged to stay away. The McDaniels were said to have been monied. In the building trade, I think. Jesse T. and Edna lived around Cash most of their lives. Another of my lines are also from the area. I know even less about them. Marvel Cole wife Emma. Oral family history says Marvel was traded by his parents while passing through AR for a banty rooster. They had too many kids and couldn't feed them. Would appreciate any information someone might have. Lynn Lee |
