His gr-grandfather was William (Willie) Oscar Gray b Jan 1871. Willie's mother, Martha Gray b 1842, was never married. A Gray family member clued us in on the Couch name. Pickens County is where I found Martha in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census (she was originally from Laurens County). In the 1870 census, the only male Couches I found in PIckens County appeared to be descendants of John Couch. The men I felt might be the father of Willie were either William Couch b abt 1828 or his son Oscar b abt 1852. One of the reasons I think it may be this particular family (besides the name of Martha's son) is that in the 1930 census, Willie's oldest son, James is living in Liberty, SC one house down from an Emma Couch, who I think may have been one of Oscar's unmarried sisters, two houses away from Walter B Couch, definitely Oscar's brother, and on the other side a few houses away was Harrison Couch, Oscar's nephew.
