Wright’s 12th Arkansas Cavalry, CSA.
Field and Staff.

The Field and Staff was organized at Camden, Arkansas, on December 17, 1863, as the 2nd Battalion Arkansas State Troops.  It was reorganized as the 12th Regiment Arkansas Cavalry, CSA, on February 15, 1864.  There is one extant muster roll for the Field and Staff, covering the period January 1 to February 29, 1864, when the regiment was stationed at Cut Off, Drew County, Arkansas.
 

Bowie, James W
Lieutenant-Colonel—Enlisted in Co. F, 12th Arkansas Cavalry, at Lake Village, Arkansas, November 10, 1863; elected captain, November 10, 1863; elected major of battalion, December 17, 1863; elected lieutenant-colonel of regiment, February 15, 1864; present, February 29, 1864; born in Arkansas, c1836; listed in Chicot county 1860 census; occupation farmer.

Crute, Algernon S
Assistant Quartermaster—Enlisted in the Monticello Artillery at Monticello, Arkansas, February 8, 1862; appointed corporal, February 8, 1862; returned to Arkansas and enlisted in Co. B, 12th Arkansas Cavalry, at Monticello, October 15, 1863; elected first lieutenant, October 15, 1863; detailed as acting assistant quartermaster since December 17, 1863; present, detailed, February 29, 1864; born in Georgia, c1840; listed in Chicot county 1860 census.

Johnson, Howell
Sergeant-Major—Enlisted in Co. I, 1st Arkansas Infantry, at Monticello, Arkansas, May 8, 1861; wounded at Shiloh, Tennessee, April 6, 1862, and furloughed back to Arkansas; enlisted in Co. B, 12th Arkansas Cavalry, at Monticello, October 15, 1863; assigned as acting sergeant major, December 17, 1863; present, February 29, 1864; born in Guilford county, North Carolina, c1837; occupation clerk.

Looney, Frederick B
Assistant Surgeon—Enlisted in Co. H, 12th Arkansas Cavalry, in Ashley county, Arkansas, December 19, 1863; detailed to extra duty as acting assistant surgeon, February 1, 1864; present, February 29, 1864; captured at Jefferson City, Missouri, October 8, 1864; confined at U.S. Military Prison, Fort Delaware; exchanged at Fort Monroe, Virginia, January 6, 1865; born January 22, 1836; died December 12, 1902; married Mary Annie Arnett.

Saunders, John H
Surgeon—Not listed on the muster roll, but said to have served as surgeon of battalion.

Wright, George M
Major—Appointed adjutant of 26th Arkansas Infantry, March 18, 1863; transferred to Wright’s Battalion and appointed adjutant, December 27, 1863; elected major of regiment, February 15, 1864; present, February 29, 1864; born in Alabama, c1840; listed in Union county 1860 census; occupation farmer.

Wright, John Crowell
Colonel—Elected lieutenant-colonel of battalion, December 17, 1863; elected colonel of regiment, February 15, 1864; present, February 29, 1864; previously served as lieutenant-colonel of 15th (Johnson’s) Arkansas Infantry, and lieutenant-colonel of 26th Arkansas Infantry; born in Georgia, c1835; married Mary Alabama Newton; he filed Arkansas pension application #13133 from Union county, August 11, 1914; listed in Union county 1860 census; occupation farmer.
