Pine Bluff Artillery (Steck’s Battery)

The Pine Bluff Artillery was organized on April 27, 1861, at Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas, by Captain Frederick P. Steck.  The battery traveled to Pitman’s Ferry, Arkansas, as part of the Arkansas State Troops brigade.  In July, the Governor offered the services of the Arkansas State Troops to the new Confederate States government, with the proviso that the troops extend their three-month State enlistments to twelve months.  About half of the Pine Bluff Artillery elected not to enter Confederate service, so the battery disbanded on July 26, 1861, and reorganized.  On August 1, 1861, the reorganized Pine Bluff Artillery enlisted in Confederate service as part of Colonel John Sappington Marmaduke’s First Battalion Arkansas Infantry.  The battalion was augmented with additional companies and became Marmaduke’s 18th Regiment Arkansas Infantry.  When it was learned that Carroll’s regiment had already been designated as the 18th Arkansas Infantry, Marmaduke’s regiment was redesignated as the 3rd Confederate Infantry.  The Pine Bluff Artillery was designated as Company G in Marmaduke’s regiment.

The following roster is taken from a payroll of the original members of the Pine Bluff Artillery, while still in State service at Pitman’s Ferry, July 26, 1861.
