Captain Americus V. Rieff organized a cavalry troop at Fayetteville, Washington county, Arkansas, in June 1861.  The company was enrolled in State service at Camp McRae, Arkansas, on July 5, 1861, but was not assigned to a cavalry regiment.  Rieff’s company served as an independent cavalry troop, reporting directly to Brigadier-General Ben McCulloch.  Only in service for a month and half, the company operated as scouts and as the general’s escort.  All the Arkansas State Troops were discharged in August and September, 1861, in order to form new companies for Confederate service.  Rieff’s mounted company was discharged near Springfield, Missouri, August 13, 1861, three days after the battle of Wilson’s Creek.  Many of its members later served in the 34th and 35th Arkansas Regiments.

The following roster is from the original muster roll of Rieff’s company.  The muster roll bears the following endorsement:  “This Company has been in service under me since the first of July, 1861.  The Company is now discharged.  It has done much valuable service.—Ben McCulloch, Brig. Genl. Comdg.”
