In accordance with an ordinance enacted by the Arkansas Secession Convention, requiring each county in the State to appoint home guards of minute-men for local defense, the Prairie County Court met at Brownsville on June 24, 1861, to organize a home guard organization for the county and to make appointments thereto.  Over the next few weeks, each of the ten townships in Prairie County organized home guard companies.  Pleasant A. Thomason, of Prairie Township, was appointed colonel and commander-in-chief of the Prairie County Home Guard.  William C. Hazen (Clear Lake Township), A. J. Thomas (Pigeon Roost Township), and Benjamin C. Totten (White River Township) were appointed as War Finance Commissioners, and authorized and directed to procure arms for the home guard companies.  Officers of the individual companies were commissioned by election.  Unlike most other counties in the State, the Prairie County Home Guard maintained its organization well into 1862, although its strength was severely depleted as individual home guards began joining regular Confederate regiments. — Bryan Howerton, researcher.
