The Napoleon Grays.
The “Napoleon Grays” company of volunteer infantry was organized on May 7, 1861, at Napoleon, a thriving port on the Mississippi River in Desha County, Arkansas. The company traveled upriver to Mound City, Arkansas, where, on May 14, 1861, it was assigned to the First Regiment Arkansas State Troops as Company E. The regiment was commanded by the renowned Colonel Patrick Ronayne Cleburne, who would later rise to the rank of major-general and fall in battle at Franklin, Tennessee, in 1864. By July 1861, the regiment was stationed at Camp Yell, located at Pitman’s Ferry, Arkansas, where, on July 23, the regiment formally enlisted in Confederate service. Cleburne’s regiment was initially designated as the First Regiment Arkansas Volunteers (with the Napoleon Grays designated as Company C), but when it was discovered that the State Military Board had already assigned that designation to Colonel James Fleming Fagan’s regiment, Cleburne’s regiment was resdesignated as the Fifteenth Regiment Arkansas Infantry, with the Napoleon Grays designated as Company D.
A large number of the soldiers of the Napoleon Grays were Irish river-boat men, and the company acquired somewhat of a reputation as “hard-drinking, hard-fighting” characters, and their antics often offended the sensibilities of the more staid officers of the Pine Bluff and Helena companies. The Irishmen of the Napoleon Grays, while they never became parade-ground soldiers, proved themselves in combat at the Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862. The Grays, “deployed as skirmishers, moved quickly through the field, and though far outflanked by the enemy on our left, rushed forward under a terrific fire from the serried ranks drawn up in front of the camp,” and “continued to pursue the enemy until out of ammunition.”
The Napoleon Grays served with the Fifteenth Arkansas throughout the war, fighting in every major engagement in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina. When the Army of Tennessee surrendered on April 26, 1865, only five of the Grays were left.
