Washington Artillery (Etter’s Battery)
Reconstructed Roster

The official records of the Washington Artillery are very fragmentary.  One muster roll, dated January 7, 1863, has survived.  This record is in the custody of the National Archives and is considered authoritative.  However, it is believed to represent only about a third of the men who actually served with the battery during the war.  Another authoritative record is a muster roll of the 6th Arkansas Cavalry, also on file in the National Archives, which documents the transfer of a few men from that regiment to the Washington Artillery.

Three non-authoritative sources have been used to reconstruct this roster:  First, Confederate pension applications; second, a late-1862 list of indigent families of soldiers in Hempstead county, Arkansas; and third, a postwar historical sketch which includes a roster.  The sketch is an undated, uncited typewritten transcription of an original document.  I have been unable to learn anything about the origin of this document, but it appears to have been prepared by a veteran of Etter’s Battery, presumably many years after the war.  The names contained therein are presented here merely to provide a starting point for genealogical researchers.  Hopefully, further research will someday result in the discovery of additional, authoritative documentation.
