The Chicot Rangers

The Chicot Rangers was organized at Lake Village, Chicot County, Arkansas, in April and May of 1861, by Capt. Daniel H. Reynolds, a Chicot County lawyer and future Confederate general and Arkansas State Senator.  The Rangers enlisted in Confederate service at Fort Smith on June 15, 1861, where they were assigned as Co. A, 1st Arkansas Mounted Rifles.  Their first action was at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek (Oak Hills), south of Springfield, Missouri, August 10, 1861, where the Chicot Rangers suffered 15 wounded and 2 missing in action.  Their last action as mounted troops occurred at the Battle of Pea Ridge (Elkhorn Tavern), Arkansas, on March 7-8, 1862.  Shortly after this action, the 1st and 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles were dismounted and transferred east of the Mississippi River, where they served as infantry for the rest of the war.

The Chicot Rangers took part in all the major engagements of the Confederate Army of Tennessee, including Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Dalton, Resaca, New Hope Church, Kennesaw Mountain, Moore’s Mill, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Ezra Church, Lovejoy Station, Jonesboro, Moon Station, Franklin, Nashville, and Bentonville.  Being sent so far from Arkansas, the 1st Arkansas Mounted Rifles was unable to recruit to any great extent during the war.  Finally being worn down to a handful of men, the 1st and 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles were consolidated with the remanants of other Arkansas regiments on April 9, 1865, as the 1st Consolidated Mounted Rifles.  When the regiment surrendered at Jamestown, North Carolina, April 30, 1865, only 11 members of the Chicot Rangers were left.
