4TH BATTALION OF ARKANSAS INFANTRY
CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA

The Fourth Battalion Arkansas Infantry was organized at Little Rock on November 10, 1861, initially with five companies raised in central Arkansas.  Capt. Frederick William Hoadley’s Co. D, of Pulaski County, was detached from the battalion and assigned to the 1st Tennessee Heavy Artillery.  The remainder of the battalion served as infantry throughout the war in the Confederate Army of Tennessee, as part of the highly-respected McNair’s Brigade of Arkansas troops.  The battalion fought in all the major engagements of the Army of Tennessee, including Richmond, Kentucky; Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Jackson, Mississippi;  Chickamauga, Georgia; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and the Atlanta Campaign. In 1863, the remnants of the Battalion were consolidated with the 4th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, where they fought on through the Tennessee and Carolinas campaigns.  They surrendered with Johnston at Greensboro, North Carolina, on April 26, 1865.
