The 4th Regt was organized and mustered into Confederate Service at Miller's Springs, Lawrence Co, MO, on 17Aug1861. Reorganized at Corinth, MS 8May1862. Consolidated with the 1st and 2d Mtd Rifles, 4th Inf Bn, and 9th and 25th Inf Regts and designated as the 1st Mtd Rifles Consolidated at Smithfield, NC on 9Apr1865.  An 11th unlettered company, mustered in 11Nov1861 and known as Kelley's  Company, became Co H of the 16th AR Inf 4Dec1861.

First Commander was: Evander McNair, Col.
