30th
Arkansas Infantry
CSA
Co A & L

The 30th Ark Inf was East of the Mississippi River when the Union Forces took control of the River early in 1862. Some of the officers were west of the river at the time and were cut of from returning to the Regt..They then set about forming another 30th Ark which was called HART'S REGT at the time. One company was formed at Oak Bluff, Clay Co, AR, which was a few miles NW of what is now Rector, AR This was Company A (later probably reorganized as Co L) and was formed for the most part by a Lt ALLEN. Most of the service records of the personnel show service in Co A and L. The following roster of personnel was extracted from microfilm records of the 30th Ark Inf by members of the Gerdes family (Edward, Catherine, Randal, Mark) of Jonesboro, AR.

A FEW WORDS about the term "deserted" from Jeri Helms Fultz:

Many of these soldiers have the word "deserted" after their names.. We would like you to know that this is from the Microfilm from the National Archives. These soldiers may have been separated from their Units in the heat of battle, joined up with other Units and continued to fight this war.. They may have had famillies back home who were starving and no one to plant their crops or gardens... They may have gone home to visit awhile with loved ones and then return, only to find that there were so many miles between them and their original Unit that rejoining them was an impossibility, and so they joined with others to continue to fight in the war.

If you have any questions about the validity of the term "deserted" after your soldiers name, please do send for copies of the original records from the Arkansas History Commission. There is a form that can be downloaded for this purpose...

ALLEN, E.M. Pvt - Co A & L, 19 Sep 1862

ALLEN, E.M. Capt Co L aptd 18Mar1862 at Camp Defense, Mo . Recommended for separation at Camp Hope 8Sep1862 due to rheumatism. Edward Gerdes was kind enough to look at the 1860 Clay County census pertaining to E.M. Allen. It seems to indicate that the two E. M. Allens were father and son.
