The information on these  pages was edited and graciously  given to the  Edward G. Gerdes Arkansas Civil

Organized at Fredericksburg, Virginia, October 29, 1861; disbanded at Camp Lee, Virginia, July 15, 1862.

The following roster is compiled from the one surviving field and staff muster roll:  March 1 to April 30, 1862, in camp near Fredericksburg.  Additional military and biographical information has been included to aid researchers.  Most of the soldiers marked, "no further record," are presumed to have been killed at the Battle of Mechanicsville, June 26, 1862.


Bronaugh, William Naylor
Major.  Enlisted in Co. D, 1st Arkansas Infantry, at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, May 1, 1861; elected third lieutenant, May 1, 1861; appointed adjutant, May 19, 1861; appointed major, 2nd Arkansas Battalion, October 29, 1861; mortally wounded at Mechanicsville, Virginia, June 26, 1862; died of wounds at Richmond, Virginia, July 5, 1862; born in Loudoun county, Virginia, c1833; occupation, professor at St John's College, Little Rock, Arkansas; brother of battalion surgeon Francis L. Bronaugh.

Bronaugh, Francis L
Assistant Surgeon.  Appointed assistant surgeon, 2nd Arkansas Battalion, 1861; born in Loudoun county, Virginia; emigrated to Mexico after the war; died at San Buena Ventura, Mexico, in 1879; brother of battalion commander, William N. Bronaugh.

Carrington, Paul R
Adjutant.  Enlisted in Co. A, 1st Arkansas Infantry, at El Dorado, Arkansas, May 2, 1861; furloughed from Virginia to Arkansas, July 15, 1861; enlisted in Co. C, 2nd Arkansas Battalion, at El Dorado, Arkansas, September 23, 1861; elected first lieutenant, September 23, 1861; detailed as acting adjutant, October 29, 1861; later served as adjutant, 26th Arkansas Infantry; resigned, January 28, 1863; born in Arkansas, c1839; listed in Union county 1860 census, with wife V.H.; occupation farmer.

Cunningham, James W
Quartermaster-Sergeant.  Enlisted in Co. A, 2nd Arkansas Battalion, at Hot Springs, Arkansas, September 17, 1861; detailed as quartermaster-sergeant, December 25, 1861; promoted second lieutenant, May 20, 1862; appointed quartermaster, 1862; no further record; born in Saline county, Arkansas, c1837; occupation tradesman.

Hanks, Ira M
Assistant Quartermaster and Ordnance Master.  Enlisted in Co. A, 2nd Arkansas Battalion, at Hot Springs, Arkansas, September 17, 1861; detailed as assistant quartermaster and ordnance master, December 25, 1861; transferred to Co. K, 3rd Arkansas Infantry, July 18, 1862; discharged for rheumatism at Camp Lee, Virginia, July 23, 1862; born in Lincoln county, North Carolina, c1824; occupation carpenter.

Hunter, James Franklin
Sergeant-Major.  Enlisted in Co. G, 1st Arkansas Infantry, at Jacksonport, Arkansas, May 1, 1861; appointed first sergeant, May 1, 1861; administratively transferred to Co. C, 2nd Arkansas Battalion, December 1, 1861, and immediately appointed battalion sergeant-major; discharged at Camp Lee, Virginia, July 14, 1862; enlisted in Co. M, 30th Arkansas Infantry, at Jacksonport, Arkansas, August 1, 1862; elected captain, August 1, 1862; transferred to Co. K, 30th Arkansas Infantry; resigned, May 28, 1863; later enlisted in Co. F, 15th Arkansas Cavalry Battalion; born in Tennessee, August 27, 1833; died at Newport, Arkansas, November 8, 1880; married Sophronia Caroline Selvidge, April 23, 1857; occupation clerk.

Jones, John T
Assistant Surgeon.  Appointed assistant surgeon, 2nd Arkansas Battalion, January 16, 1862; captured at Warrenton, Virginia, October 1, 1862; paroled, November 18, 1862.

McGehee, Samuel M
Assistant Quartermaster.  Enlisted in Co. B, 2nd Arkansas Battalion, at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, September 3, 1861; elected first lieutenant, September 3, 1861; appointed assistant quartermaster; no further record; bought land in Grant county in 1860.

Tatum, Thomas Champion
Commissary Sergeant.  Enlisted in Co. C, 2nd Arkansas Battalion, at El Dorado, Arkansas, September 23, 1861; appointed commissary sergeant, January 1, 1862; discharged at Camp Lee, Virginia, May 17, 1862; born in Union county, Arkansas, c1844; listed in Union county 1860 census; occupation farmer.
