The 14th (Mitchell's-Powers) Inf Regt was organized in the summer and fall of 1861 with Col. William C. Mitchell, commanding.
The regt was reorganized 16 May 1862. It was field consolidated with the 18th and 23rd Inf Regts from Feb 1863 to Jul 1863. It was surrendered at Port Hudson, LA, on Jul 8, 1863. It was paroled during the same month and was consolidated with the 15th NW, 16th and 21st Inf Regts and became the 1st Infantry Regiment Consolidated, Trans-Mississippi Dept in Jan 1864.

Colonel—The Senate did not approve his appointment as colonel, stating that Maj. Gen. Van Dorn had no authority to make such an appointment, that the way to be a commander was to be elected at reorganization or appointed or elected at the initial organization; see also Powers’ Regiment Confederate Cavalry.
