He was captured 7Apr1862 at Island #10 (in the Mississippi River near New Madrid, MO) and sent to military prison at Camp Chase, OH 13Apr1862. Transferred to Johnson's Island, near Sandusky, OH 1May1862. He was sent to Vicksburg, MS 1Sep1862 and was received by CSA forces on board the Steamer Jno. H. Done 20Sep1862 and was formally declared exchanged 10Nov1862. James Monroe Sanders was born March 2, 1818 and died February 7,
1869. He is buried in Malvern, Arkansas in the Saginaw/Stribling Cemetery. His tombstone says ARK CAPT CO C 11 REGT ARK INF CONFED. STATES ARMY.
