A brief history of the 10th Arkansas Infantry

Co. A  — “Quitman Rifles” of Van Buren County, enlisted July 15, 1861 atSpringfield, Arkansas.
Co. B  — “Ready Rifles” of Conway County, enlisted July 20, 1861 at  Springfield, Arkansas.
Co. C  — “Choctaw Riflemen” of Van Buren County, enlisted July 16, 1861 at Springfield, Arkansas.
Co. D  — “White County Volunteers” of White County, enlisted July 29, 1861 at Springfield, Arkansas.
Co. E  — “Conway Invincibles” of Conway County, enlisted July 15, 1861 at Springfield, Arkansas.
Co. F  — “Muddy Bayou Heroes” of Conway County, enlisted July 24, 1861 at Springfield, Arkansas.
Co. G  — “Red River Riflemen” of Van Buren County, enlisted July 18, 1861 at Springfield, Arkansas.
Co. H  — “Perry County Mountaineers” of Perry County, enlisted July 27, 1861 at Springfield, Arkansas.
Co.  I  — “Conway Tigers” of Conway County, enlisted July 22, 1861 at Springfield, Arkansas.
Co. K  — “Springfield Sharpshooters” of Conway County, enlisted July 11, 1861 at Springfield, Arkansas.

This regiment was organized in July 1861 at Springfield, Conway Co, AR. It was reduced to eight companies in Apr1862 by transferring the personnel of Company F to Company  C and dividing Company I among all the other companies. Reorganized 8May1862. Surrendered 9Jul1863 at Port Hudson, LA and was paroled 12-13Jul1863. It was declared exchanged in 1864. It was mounted and consolidated with other units and designated as the 10th Cavalry Regt in 1864.

The first commander was Col Thomas D. Merrick.

CHANDLER, JOSEPH C. Asst Surgeon -  Captured 9 Jul 1863 at Pt Hudson, LA. POW 2 Aug 1863.

EXUM, JOHN H. Sgt Major  - Enl 18 Jul 1861. Transferred from Co F. Captured 9 Jul 1863 at Pt Hudson, LA and paroled 12-13 Jul 1863. Paroled 5 Jun 1865 at Jacksonport, AR. Ht 5' 11 3/4", eyes blk, hair blk, complx drk, age 23, born in TN.

FORD, S.S. Lt Col,  - Resigned 2 Dec 1861.

FOWLER, HARDEY Chaplain  - Leave of absence 15 Apr 1863

HICKMAN, W.D. 1Lt  - Enl 27 Jul 1861 at Springfield, AR. Resigned 24 Jan 1862. Aptd Sgt Major 14 Apr 1862.Captured 9 Jul 1863 at Port Hudson, LA and sent to MP at Custom House, New Orleans, LA then to New York 3 Oct 1863 then to Johnson's Island, OH then to Point Lookout, MD 21 Mar 1865. Released 12 Jun 1865.

KENDALL, S.G. QM SGT  - Enl 18 Jul 1861 at Springfield, AR. Appointed 20 Jul 1862. Captured 9 Jul1 863 at Port Hudson, LA and paroled 12-13 Jul 1863.

LOVE, W.B. Asst Surgeon  - Furlough 11 Apr 1863.

MERRICK, G.A. Cpt  - Enlected  8 May 1862. Captured 7 Jul 1863 at Port Hudson, LA and sent to MP at Johnson's Island, OH 29 Jul 1863 then to Point Lookout, MD. 21 Mar 1865.Released 12 Jun 1865. Ht 5' 9 1/2", eyes, blk, hair blk, complx ruddy, residence: Pulaski Co, AR.

MERRICK, T.D. Col. Commanding.  - Resigned and displaced at reorganization. Dropped 14 May 1862.

NIEMAN, S.H.  QM  - Appointed 21 Jul 1862. Resigned & dropped 25 Oct 1862.

PATTY, OBED Major  - Resigned. Dropped 14 May 1862.

SAWYER, M.G. Pvt  - Enl 29 Jul 1861 at Springfield, AR. Aptd Ord Sgt 6 Jul 1862. Paroled at Wittsburg, AR 25 May 1865. Ht 5' 5", eyes gray, hair lt, complx fair, age 21.

VAUGHAN, E.L. Col -  Enl 15 Jul 1861 at Springfield, AR. Captured 9 Jul 1863 at Port Hudson, LA and sent to MP at Johnson's Island, OH 13 Oct 1863. Released 25 Jul 1865. Ht 6', eyes blk, hair drk, complx drk, age 29, residence: Quitman, AR.

VENABLE, L.R. Lt Col  - Appointed 27 Jul 1861. Resigned  and discharged at reorganization, Dropped 14 May 1862.

VENABLE, WILLIAM Sgt Major -  Rnl 27 Jul 1861 at Springfield, AR.

WITT, A.R. Col  - Enl 15 Jul 1861 at Springfield, AR. Wounded 6 Apr 1862 at Shiloh, TN. Aptd Col 14 Feb 1863. Signed as commanding 10th Regt. Captured 28 May 1863 near Port Hudson, LA and sent to MP at New Orleans, LA.

MARTIN, E.L. Pvt  - Captured 5 Dec 186(3?) at Lewisburg, AR. and sent to MP at little Rock, AR.

OGLESBY, JOSEPH 2Lt   - Reference: 12th AR Inf.

ROBERTS, JOHN C. 1Lt   - Captured 9 Jul 1863 at Port Hudson, LA and sent to MP at Johnson's Island, OH 13 Oct 1863. Exchanged at Point Lookout, MD 21 Mar 1865.

SHACKLEFORD, FELIX L. 2Lt  - Captured 9 Jul 1863 at Port Hudson, LA and sent to MP at New Orleans, LA

STRINGFELLOW, BENJAMIN Pvt  - Captured 14 Aug 1864 in White Co, AR. and sent to MP at Rock Island, IL 8 Dec 1864. Died of pneumonia 16 Dec 1864. Buried in grave #1680.

TRAFICK, A.M. 2Lt  - Captured 7 Jul 1863 at Port Hudson, LA and sent to MP at Ft Delaware, DE 28 Apr 1865.

WILBURN, WILLIAM Pvt  - Captured in Ashley Co, AR 29 Mar 1864 and sent to MP at Rock, Island, IL  27 May 1864. Released on oath 18 Oct 1864. Ht 5/ 7", eyes gray, hair lt, complx fair, age 20, residence: Conway Co, AR.
