Notes by Regina Weaver:
Notes of interest here from my great aunt, Beulah Jane Simpson Tate, daughter of Enoch Oscar Simpson, and Artie Bell Howard....telling of Mr. Simpson's death, of Neal Coake, and of Rebecca Howard.from Beulah Simpson Tate (1996):
"Our Grandfather and Grandmother Simpson lived in a house just north of the little community of Jesup. Grandfather operated a store just out in front of their home. The first post-office was located in the store and our grandfather was the first Jesup postmaster. The post office was later moved to a store in Jesup managed by Uncle Ben Taylor. I never knew our grandfather Simpson. He died in his early forties. Our father was only nine years old when his father died. Grandfather Simpson had hired Neal Coake to work for him. They spelled their name Coake way back then, but later began spelling it Coke. After grandfather's death our grandmother married Neal Coake. They had one son, Lewis Coake. Lewis spelled his last name Coake as long as he lived. Grandmother and Grandfather Coake had a buggy. They would come to visit our family and take me home with them to stay a week or two. I always enjoyed my visits at our grandparents home. They had a big apple orchard east of their house and always had lots of different kinds of apples every year, as well as peaches, plums, apricots and grapes. In spring grandmother would set 6 or 8 of her big Rhode Island hens on eggs to hatch little chickens. When they hatched little chickens grandmother would put the chickens with just about three of the hens. She had several chicken coops in her back yard where the baby chickens were kept. I loved those baby chickens, but the mother hens would peck you if you weren't careful. Grandmother made coffee in an enamelware blue coffee pot that had white specks on it. Back then when you bought coffee you got coffee beans which had to be ground before making your coffee. Grandmother had an old-fashioned coffee-grinder and she would let me grind the coffee sometimes. She put water in the coffee pot and she knew how much of the ground coffee to put into the pot of water to get the taste she wanted. It was boiled until it looked the right color she wanted it to be. Grandmother would pour some coffee in a cup, then add milk and cream and sugar for me to drink for breakfast. It was very good, too. That is how I got started drinking coffee! Now, my parents didn't drink coffee, so when I went to visit Grandmother Coake is the only time I got coffee until I was grown up. Grandmother's health caused her not to be able to carry on all her household chores, so she had a lady to come live with them and help her in her work. The lady was Molly Franklin, a very nice person who was lots of help. Molly stayed a few years then left to get married. Rebecca Howard came to work for grandmother. She was good help, too. Grandmother became ill with what the Doctor called dropsy - she was swollen all over because her body retained liquid. She became bedfast. I remember sitting at her bedside part-time when she was ill. She passed away August 30, 1917. Grandfather Coake married Rebecca Howard, the lady that was staying with them. They became parents of Gaston, Lela Jane and Afton Coake."
