Descendants of Meredith W. Helm
Meredith's parentage is unproven. He reportedly lived in Fairfield County, South Carolina, before migrating to Tennessee where the majority of his children were born. No record have been found to identify him until his death in Cooper County, Missouri, c1821. He may have been the son of Joseph Helm (Hellems) who resided in Fairfield County. [1790 Federal Census Records] A Joseph HELLEMS was appraiser of the property of Peter Crossity, deceased, on 10 April, 1794, along with Jesse GLADDEN and John GOODRUM. [Some South Carolina County Records] William Hellums, who died c1800 in Pendleton District, South Carolina, named in his will brothers by the name of James and Joseph Hellums. These families are believed to have descended from Leonard Helm, who immigrated from Lancashire County, England, to Virginia c1719. Meredith is a family name, passed down from one generation to another is Leonard's family.
On 9 April 1821, Cooper County, Missouri, Administrator bond to Jacob Simons; Security: Maliki and William Helm, $1400.00. Jacob Simons affidavit: This deponent saith that Meredith Helm deceased died leaving the following heirs, to wit: Maliki Helm, Wm Helm, Polly Donaldson, late Polly Helm, Allen Helm, Susannah Simons, late Susannah Helm, Margaret Helm, Dice Helm, Meredith W. Helm, Jinsi Helm, Tillman & Rhoda Helm.
