Green B. purchased land in Lafayette County, Mississippi, per Chancery Court records, book 1, page 28: Greenberry Helms deed, by J. L. Kendle and D. D. Scrivener, filed 29 January 1838; recorded 1 July 1838, for the south half of the southwest quarter of section 16, township 9, range 3, west of the home of Thomas Lovelady; also the south half of the southeast quarter of section 16, township 9, range 3 west; price was $850.00.
In 1850, G. Helam owned 160 acres, M. Helms, 35 acres and W. J. Simons, 320 acres in Lafayette County, Mississippi; in 1860, G. Helms owned 160 acres and Weston Simons, 110 acres; A. Tubbs, 40 acres and John Wheeler, 80. M. Helms was not listed in the 1860 records. [Early Settlers of Lafayette County, MS]
Lafayette County Chancery Court records, book H, pages 349-350: on 29 October 1855, Greenberry Helms, Elizabeth J. Wheeler, Nathaniel Wheeler, Leanna Mills, John S. Mills, Nancy A. Tubbs, and Aquilla Tubbs, with Elizabeth Helms conveyed to D. D. Scrivener, their life estate in the slaves Patsy and Ruth for land in Lafayette County, Mississippi, so that Elizabeth could have a home as long as she lived with the right to cultivate the land as she desired and to have the use of wood to the extent that she needed it.
On 3 November 1855, Green B. purchased 72 acres of land from the heirs: Nancy Tubbs & Aquilla Tubbs, her husband; Leanna Mills and her husband John S. Mills, and Jane Wheeler and her husband Nathaniel C. Wheeler for the sum of $366.00.
On 15 May 1863, Lafayette county, Chancery Court records, Book K, page 242, G. B. Helms sold 163 acres to Nathaniel Pate for the sum of $1100.00.
It is probable that Green B. Helms served some time in the Confederate Army, though proof has not been sought. Per Mississippi Memories, Volume IV, 1994: on 6 March 1863, G. B. Helems was listed as a member of Captain Humphreys Company A., 4th regiment, Mississippi State Troops, in a petition regarding the discharge of M. E. Harkins, who owned a small grist mill on Yellow Leaf Creek, 5-1/2 miles south of Oxford, which was of great use to the settlement.
On 11 January 1873, Lafayette County Chancery Court records, Book P, page 379: G. B. Helms sold to Nancy E. Turner [his aunt] fifty acres to secure a note for $50.00 at 10% interest. The debt was repaid the following year.
On the same page, W. J. Simons signed a note to Nancy E. Turner for $200.00 at 10% interest which was paid in full on 13 March 1876.
Green B. Helms was living in Lafayette Springs, Mississippi, per the 1870 census records. He then had eight children. By 1880, he was residing in Izard County, Arkansas and had another son named John Wesley. In the 1900 census records, his widow, Mary Ann Elizabeth Simons was living in the household of her son Malachi and his wife Lucinda. Next door lived John Wesley Helms with his wife Fannie. John Helms, his grandson (son of Margaret and James Malachi Helms), lived two houses away with his first wife, Della Copeland.
