1. James UNDERWOOD, born 1804, died before November 11, 18522 in Lawrence Co, AR. He married an Elizabeth who was born in Missouri about 1807. James' father, Gideon, was born in Virginia and his mother in Missouri.
They had the following children:

2. Martha Margret UNDERWOOD was born in 1833 in MO. She married
Zachaeus RATLIFF, son of Elam RATLIFF and Unknown, on 10 Feb 1848 in
Lawrence Co, AR. Martha died in 1886. (Zachaeus RATLIFF was born on
11 Aug 1824 in NC. , died on 3 Sep 1890 in AR.; buried in Sep 1890
in Cemetery, Smithville, AR. .)
They had the following children:
8 F i. Melissa Jane RATLIFF was born on 15 Jan 1849. She died
on 21 Jan 1899. Melissa married Amos J. BRATCHER.
9 F ii. Elizabeth RATLIFF was born about 1850.
10 M iii. James S RATLIFF was born about 1852. James died about
1888.
11 F iv. Mary A. C RATLIFF was born about 1854.
12 M v. Carney Strong RATLIFF was born on 27 Dec 1855. He died
on 21 Feb 1937.
13 M vi. David G RATLIFF was born in Mar 1858. David died about
1917.
14 M vii. Mcalexander RATLIFF was born on 6 Jan 1863. He died on
28 Apr 1941.
15 M viii. William Thomas RATLIFF was born about 1860. William died
about 1927.
16 F ix. Louisa Josephine RATLIFF was born on 25 Aug 1865. She
died on 26 May 1950 in Lawrence Co, AR. Louisa was
buried in May 1950 in Friendship Cem, Lawrence, AR.
Louisa married Isaac Lonnie FRISBEE, son of Isaac FRISBEE
and Mrs., on 10 Mar 1887 in Lawrence Co, AR. (Isaac
Lonnie FRISBEE was born on 16 Aug 1867 in MO. , died on 9
Jan 1930 in Lawrence Co, AR. , buried in Jan 1930 in
Friendship Cem, Lawrence, AR. .)
17 F x. Martha Frances RATLIFF was born on 23 Nov 1868. She died
on 11 Nov 1949.
18 M xi. Amos John Edward RATLIFF was born on 17 Mar 1872 in
Randolph County, AR. Amos died on 17 Apr 1948.

Note 1: A James Underwood enlisted in the Mexican War on June 18, 1846 in Smithville, Lawrence County, Arkansas. He was in Co C ARK Batt INF & MR as a PVT.
Note 2: James' Will was administered on 24 Nov 1852 in Lawrence Co, AR. He is listed as a Captain and was known in his family as Captain James Underwood. This Will and a Letter of Administration is on file at the Lawrence County Courthouse in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. The Letter of Administration states that he died on 11 Nov 1852

Note 4: James receives a land patent from the US Government in Lawrence County, Arkansas on September 5, 1842 as a cash entry sale. There was also a Gideon M. Underwood who received patents in 1839 and 1842 in Lawrence County. Gideon is the father of Capt James Underwood.
