Spanish and French explorers established the first settlement on the east side of Black River where the river seems to outline a clover leaf. This odd geographical quirk gives the name Clover Bend to a community established at the same spot in the early 1800s by a Frenchman named Pierre Le Mieus. In the days before drainage ditches, the hillock upon which Clover Bend rested was virtually the only desirable place in the area for a settlement because much of the area was swamp land.
LeMew "as descendants of Lawrence County spell it" married Victoria Janis, a daughter of Anthony Janis, a Frenchman who made a claim in 1808 with Joseph Guignolet for tracts of land on Black River. In 1816 the grants were confirmed to John Baptiste Janis, the son of Anthony Janis who had died before the confirmation of the grants. In 1816 the land rights were sold to William Russess and a Charles Logan. All Frenchmen who had settled prior to the grants had sold by 1816 to LeMew. Other than records of grants and sales, little is known about LeMew except that he lived, raised a family, died and was buried in an unknown plot in the Old Clover Bend Cemetery.
The records of old land
deeds at Powhatan and in the General Land Office in Washington,
D.C., furnish documentary proof of their presence along Black
river about 1800. One record is of a deed made in 1816 by Pierre
LeMieux to Lewis DeMunn conveying "an improvement made by
the said Pierre LeMieux on Black river at a place about fifteen
miles
above the mouth of Current river in 1800, called by the French
`Petit Baril' and by the Americans `Peach Orchard'." The
place is now in Clay county, and a small nearby town is still
called by that name. One guesses that LeMew brought some peach
seeds with him and there on his improvement planted the first
peach orchard in the country.
The importance of that old record is that it helps to fix the date of the French settlement of the region. LeMew evidently was not alone in the country at that time. He, with a few others, is credited with having settled at Clover Bend about l800, which seems to conflict with his having made an improvement at the same time at Peach Orchard, but LeMew's father in law, Anthony Janis, who is known to have been settled at or near the old site of Lauratown as early as 1803. LeMew probably gave up his improvement at Peach Orchard in order to live near his wife's people. He lived and died and was buried at Clover Bend. He still has descendants in the county.

I received this
informtion from Ron Williams of Memphis, Tennessee.
Thought I would take time to pass on a few Le Mieux tidbits....
I believe the parents of Pierre LeMieux to be Charles-Francois LeMieux (1704/5-1763) and Angelique Goulet (1706-1760) residents of Quebec. Pierre was the last child of this couple, born at Ste. cap Ignace, Quebec. He had an older brother, Claude Fermin LeMieux, who is very well documented as being a long time resident of Kaskaskia, Illinois Country. It is my belief that Claude and Pierre came to the Illinois Country about 1770 or so, with the intent , like so many other frenchmen, of making their fortunes in the fur trade.
The first mention of Pierre is in the Spanish records relating to the construction of Fort Celeste, which later became New Madrid, Missouri. In 1790, the Commandant is clearing his financial accounts and one of the entries is a payment to Pedro LeMieux for services rendered as contractor for the clearing of land for the fort.
Next mention of Pierre is at Arkansas Post in the censuses of 1796 and 1798. In the latter, he is married to Marie Victorie Janis, the daughter of Anthony Janis and Angelique LaPlume. The story of the Janis family is remarkable, but it is another story. Anthony Janis was a "Coeur de Bois", or "Hunter of the Woods", one of those hardy people who lived in the wilds of what is now Arkansas and Missouri for most of the year, hunting and skinning animals for the fur. Arkansas Post was the gathering place to buy supplies, pay debts, sell furs, ect.
In any case, Pierre and Anthony must have known each other well. Anthony had married Angelique LaPlume in 1781 in Kaskaskia, where the marriage record still exists. She is described in the marriage records as "a pagan Indian of the Cree tribe". That tribe is now known to us as the Arikara tribe, and is part of The Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota, the Arikara homeland. How Angelique got to Illinois from North Dakota is anyone's guess, but she had been living with Anthony in Arkansas for some time, because the marriage ceremony also "made legitimate" Marie Victorie ( born about 1777) and her younger brother Antonio.
Thus, Victorie was a half Indian, and all us LeMieux are part Arikara. I have several photos of LeMieux ancestors, and a dark swarthiness is apparent in them. In the tiny community of Arkansas Post, her marriage prospects must have been very small. At the time of her marriage to Pierre, in about 1796, she would have been around 20, while Pierre was 53. This age difference was not uncommon for the day. Shortly thereafter, Anthony moved down the Current and Black Rivers to the land grant, and Pierre moved with him, as you have documented.
Just a few comments, and I will close for now. A confusion is that Pierre LeMieux and Peter Lamew are the same person. Several Lawrence County histories say that, but they are really father and son, as you have noted.
Peter's son Joseph was the direct forbearer of the present day Lamew in Arkansas. he died of TB in 1870. His wife was Elizabeth O'Laughlin, daughter of Pleasant O'Laughlin and Artimesa Merryman. They were from Indiana. Elizabeth married William Carr after Joseph died, and also had several brothers from Lawrence County who were Confederate soldiers. After the war, they sold their lands to Joseph and promptly disappeared.
Joseph and Elizabeth had three children, two of which survived into adulthood. California Ann LeMieux, born 1861, was my G-Grandmother. She married John Wyatt, and when he died, John F. Bennett. her brother, William Lafayette Lamew, is well mentioned in your write-up. California lived until 1943 and is buried in Calvin Crossing cemetery in Lawrence County under the name Callie Bennett.
More later. Again, thanks for your work, I look forward to meeting you.
